The original trilogy trailers

Update: Just as it aired during halftime in the middle of the Eagles v. Giants game, Disney dropped the full Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer on YouTube, and here it is:

Original story follows…

With the all-important theatrical trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens just hours away, we’re taking a look back at the previous six trailers.

The theatrical Star Wars Episode 7 trailer will air at half time in the NFL coverage as the Philadelphia Eagles host the New York Giants on ESPN.

We’ve already had two teaser trailers – the first blew our minds and the second gave us the most encouraging sense yet that director JJ Abrams got what made the Star Wars universe great.

So what makes a trailer awesome? Well – given that the last of these is from the early oughties you might be surprised just how different even Revenge of the Sith feels compared to modern day fare, and – let’s be honest – even with your rose-tinted glasses on you might be left wondering why anyone actually turned up to watch the original Star Wars.

Star Wars: A New Hope

Ah the movie that, in Apple parlance, changed everything; and a trailer that’s so utterly shoddy you can completely understand why the extras were swearing at the then-unknown cast as they walked past them.

The trailer highlights the cast; fresh faced Mark Hamill, the fresh faced Carrie Fisher and, well, the already ruggedly craggy Harrison Ford and definitely shows a few of the iconic moments, including Luke’s clumsy swing with Leia, but nobody could accuse it of showcasing the Star Wars universe at its finest. Bad trailer, legendary film.

Trailer rating 2.5/10

The Empire Strikes Back

The movie that changed everything – again (HT Apple again). Empire Strikes Back is arguably the best of the original trilogy, although the original Star Wars obviously remains the most impactful.

The trailer is, still, pretty awful – with a dreadful cheesy voiceover – but points are won with a glimpse of Boba Fett, a chunk of Hoth and a quick look at the key players…and Lando Calrissian. It’s an epic of romance (Luke STOP! It’s your sister…), of heroes and villains and exploding Star Wars logos.

Trailer rating 2.5/10

Return of the Jedi

Return of the Jedi in trailer form has clearly benefited from a few key learnings – with a bit of polish fairly obviously arriving for the third in the series.

There’s a few spoilers (It’s a trap!) in retrospect and the injection of an element of doubt about Luke’s parentage, as well as a Force ghost Obi Wan.

But let’s face it – it’s a long, long away from a modern trailer.

Trailer rating 5.5/10

The Prequels

The Phantom Menace

YouTube : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bD7bpG-zDJQ

The dramatic silence, the John Williams score, the awesome pod racing footage – this trailer might well have been one of the most viewed of all time.

And yet with retrospect the warning signs were there; Jar Jar is ludicrous even in trailer sized chunks, there are a few too many knowing nods to the prequels and the decision to include Anakin meeting Obi Wan is bizarre.

Still – at least we didn’t get any mention of trade federations.

Trailer rating 7/10

Attack of the Clones

YouTube : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYbW1F_c9eM

Attack of the Clones’ trailer was clearly trying to win us back – a grown up Anakin who, it’s at pains to point out, is arrogant and, well, a bit of a dick (foreshadowing!). There’s a Fett mention when we still yearned for Boba’s back story and some huge shots of armies.

But also a flying R2 D2, CGI overload and a bit too much reliance on Yoda’s sage comments a pretty bad trailer this makes.

Trailer rating 5.5/10

Revenge of the Sith

YouTube : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UnjrG_N8hU

By Revenge of the Sith we were all a bit jaded about how far Star Wars had fallen – but of all the trailers perhaps RotS is the most competent.

Plenty of Palpatine and a Vader arrival, a bit of intrigue and more evil than you can shake a lightsaber at.

This is a trailer that actually manages to make you want to go and watch the film again. Although frankly you’re probably better off just waiting for the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Trailer rating 8/10
